Interview w/ Raveena Aurora over at The Aerogram.
You often speak about your heritage as a Sikh-American on your website and in other interviews? Why is that important to you to get out?
There’s not much representation in the mainstream media of Sikh-American artists. I’d be honored to be a positive role model one day for such an incredibly strong, peaceful, and loyal community — but one that is unfortunately sometimes misrepresented and underrepresented.
My gorgeous and amazing Seattle based friend Sheeba Marie dropped a new album with her singer songwriter fabulousness all over it. You can get the Sing It From Your Soul EP on iTunes right now - and I suggest if you have to pick just one, you go with the single Flying which captures the soulfulness of her voice just so. This is the only video she has online - check it out!
This past week, I had the privilege of organizing with a dynamic group of South Asians to build the space we call Bay Area Solidarity Summer. It was a fantastic whirlwind of a week that has left my heart full and gaping at the same time. By Sunday night of BASS, word through the grapevine had it that the youth had been YouTube stalking one of the BASS organizers. It’s no surprise why - his voice has a crystal quality, earnestness, and resonating vibrato that would make any teenager’s heart melt.
…And at our Open Mic on the last night of BASS, Nevin Rao sang the above song - an original called I Don’t Know. Check out his YouTube channel for more.
Thanks to everyone that made BASS happen. For more info, visit: www.solidaritysummer.org
